Health Stores UK: Strength in sharing

Len Glenville
Chair, Health Stores UK

Why our independent channel has never mattered more

Every month in this column, we go beyond the headlines to reflect on what’s really happening in independent health stores across the country. And right now, more than ever, it’s clear: our strength lies in our people.

There’s plenty to be positive about. Organic sales are up, customer loyalty is strong, and more of you are sharing what’s working – and what’s not. That spirit of openness is powerful. It’s what makes us more resilient and better prepared for whatever’s next.

Real conversations
In May, we quietly launched a new podcast, ShopTalk.

This isn’t a glossy promo – it’s an honest space for store owners, team members, and newcomers alike to share stories, challenges, and lessons learned on the shop floor. The kind of insights you only get from being in the thick of it.

Why are we doing this? Because after years of listening, one truth stands out: we learn best from each other. And when we share openly, we all benefit.

We want your voice. What’s working in your store? What have you learned? What do you wish someone had told you when you started? ShopTalk is a platform for real people, real stories—and it starts with you.

Member survey
We’re also about to launch our Half-Year Member Survey – an essential check-in to understand what’s going on across the UK. It’s quick, but it matters.

Tell us what’s working, what’s frustrating, and where you need more support. Your responses will help us prioritise our next steps, from training and events to policy and trade partnerships. Your feedback directs the action.

Change and opportunity
A few key developments worth noting:

• Organic growth surges: The Soil Association reports a 7.3% rise in organic sales, but independent stores are doing even better – up 9% year-on-year. Gen Z is leading this trend, offering a clear path for future engagement.

• Industry pressure stalls real-food promotion: A planned government campaign to promote healthier food choices has been shelved after industry lobbying. Once again, independent stores remain essential in offering honest, health-first choices.

• Holland & Barrett restructures: While investing in store upgrades, H&B is also closing several branches. For independents, this is a moment to step forward and serve local communities with speed, care and connection.

• Healthpreneur campaign live: Our new 200+ page resource is now available to help the next generation of store founders build successful, values-led businesses. Please share it with anyone considering opening a store.

If you’ve followed this column over the years, you’ll know our goal remains simple: to listen, amplify, and advocate for independent health retail.

With ShopTalk, the survey, and our new resources, we’re doubling down on that promise. But we can’t do it alone.

Whether it’s five minutes for a survey or a quick message sharing your experiences, your input shapes everything we do.
